358 describes the panel geometry: 3 inch × 0.5 inch mesh openings made with 8 gauge (4 mm) wire — in metric terms 76.2 × 12.7 mm apertures with 4 mm wire. The name is used interchangeably with "anti-climb fence", "prison mesh" and "high-security mesh fence".
The 12.7 mm vertical aperture is too narrow for fingers or toes to grip, so the fence offers no footholds. The 4 mm wires are heavily welded at every intersection and resist standard bolt cutters, making 358 mesh extremely difficult to climb or cut quickly.

Standard panel heights are 1.8 m, 2.0 m, 2.4 m, 2.7 m and 3.0 m with a 2.2 m or 2.5 m width. For prison and military projects, panels can be stacked to reach 3.6–5.2 m total height.
